Browse & Darby is delighted to announce our latest exhibition on the work of Euan Uglow. The exhibition focuses on a range of the artist’s oeuvre, from his lesser-known landscapes to his more infamous nudes and still lifes. Browse & Darby first opened with a one-man exhibition of ten paintings by the highly acclaimed figurative painter, who was represented by the gallery until his death in 2000.
Uglow’s steadfast dedication to capturing subjects from life; his careful and methodical approach; and his commitment to depicting subjects with a striking truthfulness, characterize his highly distinctive work. Among the rarely seen, exceptional works that will be contained within this exhibition, include Summer Picture (1971-2). This artwork reveals a culmination of Uglow’s precise geometrical approach to the female nude, and his continued search for perfection within his work. His well refined use of callipers, rulers, and a multitude of plumblines ensured the models remained in the same, often angular, positions for the duration of his lengthy illustrative process, frequently spanning months and even years.
Uglow’s unique adeptness in capturing his still life subjects was grounded in his authenticity to the subject. Included in this exhibition is the panting Two others have been there (1992) which epitomises Uglow’s commitment to his subjects from life. Within the artwork, warm, brightened patches of orange flesh capture the despondent appearance of the peach as it begins to degrade, affirming Uglow’s analytical eye and discernible aesthetic.
This exhibition showcases Uglow’s oil paintings ranging from the 1950s through to the year of his death. In addition to the works on sale, the exhibition will include rarely seen works from private collections which together significantly contributed to Uglow’s recognition as a true master of figurative painting.
