Jennifer McRae studied at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen from 1987-93, followed by a year of study at the Prince's Drawing school, London. She has been exhibited across the UK and America, and has won numerous awards, including the BP Travel Award, and the Ondaatje Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. McRae is best known for her portraits and has received commissions from the likes of the National Portrait Gallery, the Sottish National Portrait Gallery, and the Garrick Club, London.

McRae works from life, while incorporating details from her own imagination. Her sense of design influences her compositions, and this coming together of reality, imagination and design feeds her inspiration. Working mainly across the medium of oil on canvas and watercolour on paper, her practice centers on the intricacies of drawing.
