Timothy Betjeman’s paintings reflect daily life in and around his studio in Camberwell, South London. There is a fascination, evident in his subjects (always painted en plein air), with dense clusters of activity to be found within open spaces, both urban and rural, and the way in which these conflicting dynamics can be reconciled in paint. His new work incorporates familiar London scenes with landscapes and interiors painted during recent residencies in Tuscany and Ayrshire, Scotland.
Born in New York City in 1982 and based in London since 2006, Timothy Betjeman studied Fine Art and Philosophy at the University of Chicago before going on to a post-graduate diploma in Drawing from The Royal Drawing School on a 2-year bursary award.
In recent years he has had solo shows in Hong Kong and London and has participated in various group shows including the Lynn Painter Stainers Prize. His work is in the collections of HRH the Prince of Wales, Clare College, Cambridge University, the Moritz-Heyman Foundation, and Dumfries House, Scotland.
“Timothy is worth watching as a natural successor to Sickert and the Camden Town Group, Auerbach and Kossoff” — Hugh St Clair for The Lady
