Browse and Darby is delighted to announce a solo exhibition of Sophie Charalambous, her first with the gallery.
Charalambous is based in London but regularly visits Cyprus (she is half British, half Cypriot) and this exhibition will feature works made during and inspired by her time there. Flora and fauna, folk art, the painted churches and local festivals are re-imagined into personal landscapes which fuse the old world and the observed present. Working between drawing, watercolour and printmaking Charalambous combines and reuses motifs to explore her relationship to a place and culture which is both profoundly familiar and revelatory.
Sophie Charalambous won First Prize in the Sunday Times Watercolour Prize 2018. Her large watercolour The Church in the Mountains was included in Prince and Patron at Buckingham Palace 2018. She teaches at the Royal Drawing School.
