Browse & Darby is delighted to announce Personal Geographies, Eileen Hogan’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The works in the exhibition have travelled from the US where they formed a substantive part of the artist’s recent retrospective exhibition at the Yale Centre for British Art.
One of Hogan’s principal subjects is gardens, or more specifically, enclosed green spaces. She has painted many well-known public locations including the Chelsea Physic Gardens and Chiswick House, as well as lesser-known private squares and gardens such as Edwardes Square and the Chelsea Arts Club. Her paintings are dense with detail, filling the surface from edge to edge. There is a sense of accumulation – of layers upon layers, marks upon marks.
The artist also has an established portraiture practice, with commissions including HRH the Price of Wales. Hogan’s unique method is to paint her sitters whilst they are talking about their lives (Hogan works with an oral historian from National Life Stories, a charity based at the British Library). As they reflect and remember, something quite unique and personal is revealed. The result is portraits of complete honesty and accuracy.
