We are delighted to present a solo exhibition of Thomas Lamb.
Primarily a painter of landscapes, Lamb explores the connection between perception and reality, our memories and our imagination. The poetry of Lamb’s work directs the viewer’s attention towards the sacred beauty of the landscape, our relationship to it, and the eternal found in nature.
Each painting begins with a walk; either through the bucolic hills and woodland surrounding his studio in Derbyshire, or the ethereal scenery of Japan, where the artist has made frequent visits. Preparatory sketches, drawn from observation, photography and memory, then form the foundation of each final work. The light and atmosphere of the landscape play an integral role – he explores landscapes bathed in moonlight, the first glimpses of a rising sun, or the luminous quality of a snow covered plain.
Born in Lincolnshire, Lamb trained at Wimbledon School of Art. He was awarded the Sainsbury Scholarship for Painting & Sculpture at the British School at Rome (2001-2003) and spent two years living and working in Italy, where he was greatly influenced by painters of the Italian Quattrocento. In 2006, he won the Prince of Wales Bursary for the Arts, Athens, and has subsequently exhibited in several group shows including Responding to Rome at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London and Hyogo International Competition of Painting, Hyogo Museum of Art, Kobe, Japan. His work was included in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, Mall Galleries, London (2013/14), shortlisted for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize (2018) and in 2019 his work was awarded the Founders Purchase Prize at the Discerning Eye exhibition. He has held four previous solo exhibitions with Browse & Darby, London (2008/11/14/17).
