Browse & Darby is delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition of works by Andy Pankhurst and Sophie de Stempel.
Andy Pankhurst presents landscapes painted over the last 36 years. Recent works brightly depict the view from the artist’s studio in East London in a vibrant palette of greens and blues, while others illustrate the more muted tones of the Welsh countryside, and the Mediterranean hues of Tuscany. Across the mediums of oil and pastel, Pankhurst explores landscape painting, producing works both structured and precise, and those which more loosely study composition and colour.
Painted over the past two years, Sophie de Stempel’s works are predominantly site specific. Exploring the immediacy of her surroundings, de Stempel presents views from her London terrace, still-lifes, and the people important to her. Reminiscent of summer with their pastel hues, she illustrates recognisable landmarks of west London including The Coronet Theatre, and the pink and yellow houses of Campden Hill. A number of portraits celebrate and pay tribute to the artist’s husband, Ian Holm, who passed away last year.
De Stempel maintains an emotive element in the subjects chosen, including the vibrant, brightly coloured Brighton Rock which provides an aide memoire of happy seaside holidays spent in Brighton with Ian.
