'Over the past two years, I’ve been working on a series of portraits of fellow artists. Post-lockdown I felt the need to connect again with people and specifically other painters. All of the other artists are friends of mine but more importantly, I’m an admirer of their work, I asked each of them to sit for me and fortunately they all agreed. All the portraits are situated in my studio, with me seen reflected in the background in the act of painting their portrait. So the set-up stays the same but each painting is treated as a particular portrait responding to the sitter individually. Alongside my paintings, each artist has contributed a work which is a ‘response’ to having their portrait painted. Beyond the creation of the pictures themselves, it’s been a privilege to talk about painting with each sitter and I can only hope these conversations have somehow embedded themselves within the paintings.'
