Sophie de Stempel’s works are predominantly site specific. Exploring the immediacy of her surroundings, de Stempel presents views from her London terrace, still-lifes, and the people important to her.
Reminiscent of summer with their pastel hues, she illustrates recognisable landmarks of west London including The Coronet Theatre, and the pink and yellow houses of Campden Hill. A number of portraits celebrate and pay tribute to the artist’s husband, Ian Holm, who passed away in 2020. De Stempel maintains an emotive element in the subjects chosen, including the vibrant, brightly coloured Brighton Rock which provides an aide memoire of happy seaside holidays spent in Brighton with Ian.
Sophie de Stempel lives and works in London. She studied at City and Guild London and has taught at the Royal Academy and Royal Drawing Schools.
