‘Dunford describes his practice as “an enquiry that gets emotional and physical”. His painting process involves the observation of shapes, colours, the direction of light, the weight of objects in space and their degree of solidity. Invention, imagination, pictorial intelligence, sensing, feeling, conscious memory and unconscious activity (as his brain attempts to interpret, sort, and organise all the information that comes to it via his senses….)’ He values getting out of a thinking mode of being, preferring a state of “not knowing”, wherein he is freer from visual preconceptions and open to feeling intense emotions. Dunford studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design (1980-1982) and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, (1982-1987) where he was taught by the artists Euan Uglow, Patrick George, Norman Norris, and Jo Volley.
He was awarded the Robert Ross Scholarship from the Slade School of Fine Art, the Richard Ford Award from the Royal Academy of Arts to study in Madrid and the Young Artists’ Award from the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Dunford is an elected member of the London Group. He lives and works in Cornwall, and has work in collections in the UK, USA, Australia, and Europe.
